The Powerful Girl Project
Our mission is to create a world where young ladies feel strong, empowered, embrace their femininity, pursue their passions, speak their truth, love with all their hearts, create deeply fulfilling careers and relationships, and feel inspired to make the world a better place.
The Powerful Girl Project was created by me! Hi, I’m Heather Urness. I’m a corporate professional that has always been passionate about working with youth. I struggled so much with self-esteem, body image, and confidence as a teen and that spilled over into my adult life too! I’ve spent the last several years building my own feelings of self-worth, confidence and love for myself and it’s had such a huge impact on my life! I want to share what I’ve learned with girls today so that they can struggle less and learn to love themselves and feel empowered!
I partnered with my best friend – Afito Chiu and together we’ve developed an incredible network of powerful women who serve as facilitators for our workshops and mentors to the girls in our programs!
Afito moved from West Africa as a teen girl and was faced with her own struggles in finding her identity, learning about a new culture, language, and adjusting to life in a new country. She feels especially passionate about helping youth immigrants and their families with the transition process and all the unique challenges that they face.
Our mission is to help teen girls and their families and we’re so excited to connect with you! Welcome to The Powerful Girl Project!
“The Powerful Girl Project consists of in-person workshops for teens covering topics such as self-esteem, confidence building, body image, health & wellness, relationships, sexuality, career selection, personal development, and personal finances. We also provide online courses for support as well as 1:1 mentoring and coaching services. Our Parents Portal (under construction) will offer courses for parents as well as free resources and referrals for where to get additional help.
We partner with non-profit organizations, schools, after-school programs, community centers and individuals. To inquire about working with us or bringing a workshop to a group of girls near you – please submit your request through our online submission form and a member of our team will be in touch!
Studies estimate that as much as 85% of the world’s population struggles with low self-esteem. This means that people have difficulty believing in themselves, in bouncing back from set-backs, in handling criticism, and in creating the lives they truly want. Low self-esteem prevents many people from going after their dreams and achieving their goals. Research suggests that around middle school, young women experience a significant drop in self-esteem which may or may not recover.
This then extends into the teenage years and eventually into adulthood which can impact a woman’s earning potential, career outlook, and overall happiness.
Self-esteem based programs when introduced into schools have been observed to have a positive effect on youth which helps decrease behavioral issues, violence, aggression (bullying), and promotes academic achievement and feelings of positivity.
When you feel better, you do better! We’re here to help make life better one teen at a time.

How do we empower young girls? How do we help with self-esteem, confidence and body image?
Simply put – all of our workshops and courses include conceptual learning elements (lecture-style live speaking), activities (journaling, embodiment exercises, fun/creative activities), a personal touch (real-life stories from ourselves and our facilitators), group activities to build relationships and connection, and a take home packet for further support.
We aim to keep our workshops engaging, interactive, supportive and fun! We provide a safe environment for girls to share and ask questions. We also offer referrals for additional professional support afterwards if needed.
Horizons for Youth
“The Powerful Girl Project was an amazing opportunity for our young ladies! Being able to see their confidence and self-esteem grow with each session was inspiring and beautiful. The Powerful Girl Project team was very professional and the content connected directly with our young ladies and their mentors.”
